Tragedy - Annie Crockart Shepherd (1898-1930)
This week I’m
writing about a tragedy that I never knew about, but happened to a cousin in the town I grew up. Annie Shepherd was the youngest daughter of Ann
Robertson Shepherd. Ann, the mother, was the oldest sister of my great grandmother, Alice Robertson Crawford. Alice was twenty two years younger than her sister and Ann had married
Charles Shepherd and started having children before Alice was born. Annie was
the youngest Shepherd child and was eight years younger than her aunt. Annie and her siblings
grew up in Forfar, where the Robertson family lived as well. By 1830 Annie was
32 and was suffering from some sort of illness. She recovered to some extent
and decided to come to the United States to recover further. She arrived in New York
City on board the Antonia, which had sailed from Greenock Scotland on October
20th 1930. Annie hoped to recover her strength while visiting with
her Aunt Alice, but unfortunately the opposite happened. Annie’s sickness only
got worse and she died on Feb 21st 1931. Alice had to call her
sister in Scotland and tell her that her child had died. She had to walk around
the block several times before she was able to bring herself the make the call.
Annie was buried in the cemetery that Alice’s husband John managed. I grew up near that same cemetery, but never knew about the Scottish cousin buried there, until I started researching the family.
